A Special Community Conversation on Chernobyl, Emergency Response, and Medical Preparedness
The Augusta Jewish Museum, in partnership with JCCFA Augusta, invites the community to a special Doctor On Call program featuring Dr. Alla Shapiro, a pediatric physician and first responder to the devastating 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Dr. Shapiro was among the medical professionals who responded to the Chernobyl disaster and witnessed firsthand the devastating effects of radiation exposure, government misinformation, and the extraordinary risks faced by emergency responders. Her experiences shaped her lifelong commitment to understanding and preparing for radiological and nuclear emergencies.
After immigrating to the United States and rebuilding her medical career, Dr. Shapiro became a leading expert in medical countermeasures for radiological and nuclear emergencies, serving for 16 years at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
During this special discussion, Dr. Shapiro will share her personal experiences as a first responder, discuss the lessons learned from Chernobyl, and explore the importance of preparedness and accurate information during public health emergencies.
